Boycott Network Solutions for Domain Squatting
1. http://commandline.org.uk/more/squat-for-the-win-2008-01-09-03-36 2. http://echeng.com/journal/2008/01/12/network-solutions-domain-squatting/ The above articles point out some of the anti-competitive behavior being practied at Network Solutions (NS). They are surreptitiously reserving domain names that people are searching for on their website. People are told a domain name is available, however, if you go to a competing registrar, you will now be told the domain name is not available and has been registered by NS. Here is the scenario, you decide to search for a domain name. Type "domain name" in google search and NS is one of the paid-for links. People will go to NS, search for their domain without realizing that NS is actually reserving their domain right out from under them. NS tells you the domain is available. However, if you go to another competing domain registration service, and do the same domain name search, they will now tell you the domain is NOT available. NS has taken it from you. The only way you can register that domain name now is to use NS as the registrar. This is anti-competitive, unethical, and done without any kind of disclosure of this practice by NS. This practice needs to be stopped. People also need to be forewarned not to use NS's website for any kind of domain name searches. To be safe, it is best to boycott NS's website and services entirely, until they change their behavior or fully disclose the anti-competitve nature of their business. Fri, 05 Oct 2007
