Section 18: Preparing for Proseal (6 / 163 wings / 500 total)
I just hit the 500 hours of build time milestone. In preparation for proseal, i decided to tackle the prep steps in this order: 1. Scuff parts that will be sealed with proseal. 2. Clean parts with alumiprep. 3. Alodine. 4. Primer any of the exterior parts. 5. Dimple. Van's instructions say to aggressively scuff parts with a scotchbrite pad. I ended up using a combination of a scotchbrite pad, emory cloth, and a coarse grit sanding pad. I copied other buildings and scuffed using criss-cross patterns. I figured the alodine would not hurt, and it does not take much extra time. After the alodine, i will have to be careful to keep all the parts clean while handling them. As far as the primer goes, i thought i would just primer the exterior of the tank once they were completely riveted together. however, i did not feel it would look all that great to cover up all the proseal joints and drips with primer. Instead I opted to just go ahead and primer exterior areas only. I was also concerned that lacquer thinner might affect the primer, if i were to use lacquer thinner for cleaning up proseal. however, the epoxy primer is not affected at all. Photo of the shim primered and nutplates clecoed in.
