    Section 9: Elevators Started (21 / 167 tail and total )

I started the elevators and have gotten up to primering the parts, up to this point. I took advantage of 2 great days of weather this weekend to clean and primer all of these small parts.

I notice that this epoxy primer definitely requires longer to cure, than the 988. I started dimpling holes after about an hour of dry time, but the primer started to peel away from the metal. I tried to dimple after 3-4 hours, and the primer definitely stuck much better.

However, my latest stop was due to another dimpling error with the pneumatic squeezer. This time, I have a figure 8. I have to figure out the best way of handling this.

I had another stop problem. One of my E-904 tip end ribs came with a pretty significant bulge in the web of the part. I ended up trying to push the bulge back in to straighten the web. It required a surprising amount of force to have any effect. Long story short, I ended up using my body weight, which suddenly caved in by creating a NEW crease. It looks like the Al actually cracked along this crease, too.

I called Van's and explained the story. They sent a new one to me right away, gratis. Thank you Van's! It's only a $9.95 part, anyway.

    Update 3/24

Ultimately, i decided the best way to go was to drill to 1/8". The result turned out better than I had thought it would. The hole is "nearly" round and a rivet should fill the voids up. I decided to drill to the next rivet size, since this is on the bottom of the elevator, anyway, so should never be seen.
