    Section 7: Finished Rudder (17 / 76 tail and total )

The rudder is now complete, after a heated struggle. Here goes the Comedy of mistakes!

My first day back-riveting started out well. It turned out to be easier than I had hoped. However, I got too complacent while back-riveting and missed the back rivet-plate with the above results.

Riveting the very aft rivet on the bottom nose-rib took some delicate care. I was able to maneuver the no nose yoke into the space to squeeze the rivet.

Sandy is helping me sandwich the two skins together. Unfortunately, I mis-aligned the stiffeners while riveting them together. I focused solely on making sure the left stiffener was on top of the right stiffener, that i forgot to make sure the left stiffener was below the cleat. Thus, shortly after this picture, i had to subsequently, drill out the stiffener rivets to correct the placement.

My brain must not have been working properly, as I also flubbed riveting the forward hole on top of the stiffener. I got my aft and forward reversed and riveted the wrong hole. I drilled out the ones I could reach, which left the bottom stiffener with the rivet in the wrong hole.

Random photo of the rudder spar. I'll never see it again after it is closed up.

My first attempt at rolling the leading edge, resulted in pillowing between the holes. Although the plans caution overdoing the rolling, I think it should mention it will require a significant amount of muscling to roll the edge.

Once I had the initial rolling done, I then just used my hands to squeeze and shape the curve so that the edge of the skin would align close to parallel to each other. Then all that is required is to slightly squeeze the left and right skins together to cleco the holes.

As I was about to put i my final rivet on the counterbalance weight, I realized that there were still clecos sticking out of the top of the rudder, on the top rib! Ooops! After drilling out a few skin rivets, I was able to complete the step I had missed, riveting together the top rib, then finish the rudder.

    Below is the final result!
