    Section 7: Start Rudder (16 / 59 tail and total )

It has been too long since my last update, since i started the rudder. I just completed the parts priming step and riveted the doublers onto the spar.

After 2 weeks of unseasonably warm weather in the 70's, the temperature dived with day time highs in the 50's. The 988 says to paint above 60F. I hope washing everything with warm water while in the direct sun helps.

Revelation #7. Nutplates should be primered / corrosion treated. Apparently, these will just rust on their own over time. I already riveted 3 of my first nutplates onto the rudder, so i will just follow-up with a coat of primer on the assembled nutplate.

Revelation #8. I had a visit from Gerry Filby, who has been a great help. He noticed that my dimples may be shallow or under-sized. Earlier, I had been afraid of overdimpling, but now i do not think that is possible.

Revelation #9. I would take the drill-press over the bandsaw anyday. I have gotten by very well without the bandsaw and instead using the dremel type tool from craftsman. Looking ahead in the plans, I cannot see anywhere where this all-in-one tool will not suffice. I purchased a Craftsman 10" drill press with laser sight to countersink the trailing edge on the rudder. I am convinced this was a great buy, considering the amount of drilling that must be done.

The next step is to back-rivet the rudder stiffeners onto the skin.
