    Section 6: VS Skin

Today was particularly exciting because even a 10 year old visitor could recognize what was taking shape looked like an airplane part.

I used the above abrasive combo to deburr the inside holes of the ribs. I first ran thru the 3M 2" scotchbrite wheel then backed it out to get polished with the scotchbrite hand pad cut into a circle and put onto the same mandrel.

I discovered i had assembled the hinges onto the inside of the VS-1003 spar, instead of on the outside, of course.

Attaching the skins was difficult. Actually, it was just attaching the middle nose rib that was difficult, or near impossible. After clecoing one side, I realized I was never going to be able to cleco the middle nose rib on the other side.

I had to remove most of the clecos, then the lower rib, then the upper rib (to get my arm inside to reach the middle rib), to be able to manipulate a pick enough to align the holes on the middle rib.

After assembling the skeleton then wrapping on the skin, i noticed the ends of the lower, middle and upper nose ribs were poking a small reverse dimple out of the skin. The bump is slightly visible and definitely felt with your finger.

I also tried removing the ribs and making sure to round out the corners of the ribs, which had no effect on the bump out.

I partly chalk this up to the fact that I still have plastic on most of the parts. Once I remove the plastic, I am hoping things will fit better.

I have a query out to the VAF forum for any advice.

1/19 Update: Someone named Kevin replied that this was a common problem. Common solution is to grind down the end tab in the nose rib. Van's mentions this in the HS directions. I added a link to this Gotchas page which talks about the issue. http://www.myrv10.com/tips/gotchas.html

A closer look at the problem nose rib, though, you still cannot see much from this.
